Dr. Veronica Anghel

Dr. Veronica Anghel is an Ax:son Johnson Institute Fellow at the Centre for Statecraft and National Security in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London.

At CSNS, she is completing her book project, Total Defence: An EU Grand Strategy for the 21st Century. The book argues that an identifiable EU grand strategy is emerging across military capabilities, economic integration, enlargement, societal resilience, and external partnerships, and uses the EU case to develop a broader theory of relational geopolitics. It examines how a political system that is state-like but not a state can mobilise its distinctive institutions and resources for security, deterrence, and geopolitical influence. Her fellowship also develops a broader research agenda on European security at CSNS, bringing the Centre’s Applied History approach into dialogue with comparative political science and research on European integration and collective security.

Veronica is a Co-Director of the European Governance and Politics Programme at the European University Institute and an Associate Editor of the Journal of European Public Policy. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Council for European Studies. Her publications have addressed European integration, enlargement, democratic resilience, the transatlantic relationship and Europe’s response to the Russia-Ukraine War. She previously served as a foreign affairs adviser to the Romanian Presidency during Russia’s annexation of Crimea, was a Fulbright Fellow at Stanford University and has taught at Johns Hopkins SAIS. In 2021, she received the European Consortium for Political Research Rising Star Award.
